Problem/Motivation

We need to ensure that nudge templates are used by people who can be trusted to de-escalate situations. We also need to ensure there are enough people who are capable of performing this role.

Proposed resolution

Develop hurdles, such as code of conduct training, that allow community members to demonstrate their qualification to use nudge templates to de-escalate situations. Encourage community members to pass the hurdles.

Remaining tasks

  1. Determine what hurdles must be passed to qualify for access to nudge templates.
  2. Develop system to track user progress through hurdles.
  3. Create a way to award access to nudge templates after hurdles are passed.
  4. Document hurdles.
  5. Decide how to encourage community members to pass hurdles.

User interface changes

  • Messages to encourage passing hurdles.
  • Hurdle documentation.

Data model changes

  • Need to record hurdles passed for each user.

I'm curious as to how many people currently have the "webmaster" role.

Also - other than the "confirmed user" role (of which I can only assume there are thousands of users with this role), are there any other roles that might be a good initial fit for this functionality?

I can think of two existing "workshop" type hurdles that could be used for this: the ongoing Code of Conduct contact training as well as the Mental Health First Aid workshop. Not sure if either/both of these are a good match, but if we want to go down the road of requiring some type of training for users to use this functionality, it seems that both of these should be in the discussion.

Another option would be to development and provide a new, customized type of training for this.

Yes, there are about 121,200 confirmed users. There is a “community” role, which is auto-granted to confirmed users after posting a certain amount of content. During our Oct 12 meeting, we discussed what is the impact of adding a new role specifically for posting nudges.

  • Technically, not a big deal.
  • Who would manage?
  • What are the requirements for getting the role?
  • Policies for keeping the role over time?
  • Maybe those with the community (or confirmed) role can post nudges under their own name, but those with an elevated role have the option of posting anonymously?
  • Does it make sense to signal that nudges posted anonymously "carry more weight" because only community members who have completed X hurdles can do this?

Suggestions for hurdles to anonymous use of nudge templates:

  1. Must be a confirmed user.
  2. Must have history of using nudge templates properly or have completed an official code of conduct training. We can create a project for code of conduct training, create an issue for each official training, and credit those who attend so that it appears on their profiles.
  3. Someone who has had anonymous access to nudge templates for 90 days must review and click a button on user profile to share access.

For @darrenoh's point number 3: to gain anonymous access to nudges, in addition to being a confirmed user (#1) and completing the "Nudge training" (#2), another community member who has already completed the nudge training and has been an anonymous nudger for 90(?) days can click a button and give them the anonymous nudger permission.
