Gatekeeping knowledge

When to use this nudge:

  • Use this when a community member uses phrases that demean another community member's contributions, ideas, or questions. For example, "I can't believe you don't know how to do this" or "this is so easy".
  • Use this when a community member specifically mentions another user's inexperience in relation to the contribution.
  • Use this when a community member makes assumptions about the motivation(s) of another community member's contributions, ideas, or questions.
  • When a community feigns surprise that another community member doesn't know something.

Formatted

This discussion appears to discourage contribution from some participants by assuming a level of education or exposure to information. This can discourage folks that are new to a conversation from asking for help or getting involved. Consider providing the new contributor with links to help them learn the topic or concept.

For more information, please refer to Drupal’s Values and Principles #3 of fostering a learning environment: long-term contributors should be role models by admitting their own shortcomings and mistakes, being vulnerable, and by giving others the same respect that was once given to them. To keep learning read this article about not feigning surprise.

Principle #9 can also be useful here: be constructively honest, and relentlessly optimistic. You can be optimistic and supportive by giving suggestions for how to improve their contributions. By being helpful, you encourage people to accept feedback and act on it.

Inclusive language - ableist terms

When to use this nudge:

  • Use this when terms like "lame", "blind", "insane", "crazy", or "retarded" are used to describe ideas or content.
  • Use this when non-people-first language is used, for example, "a handicapped person" versus "a person with a disability".

Formatted

This discussion appears to include the use of ableist language in a comment. Ableist language can be harmful to our community because it can devalue challenges experienced by people with disabilities.

For more information, please refer to Drupal’s Values and Principles about treating each other with dignity and respect.

Inclusive language - gendered terms

When to use this nudge:

  • When someone uses a gender-specific word in a non-gender-specific context that has a negative effect on a conversation (usually, in an exclusionary manner). For example, "I need to hear from you guys on what we should do"
  • Be wary of using this nudge in situations where the commenter isn't being intentionally exclusionary. For example, “Hey, guys, how about we do this?” or, “This committee needs a chairman.”
  • When someone makes an assumption about the gender of another person. For example, referring to someone requesting help as she or to someone offering expertise as he.
  • Use this nudge when a person is intentionally exclusionary or someone expresses that they feel excluded.

Formatted

This discussion appears to include the use of gendered language in a comment. Gendered language can be harmful to our community because it can signal that we assume that people’s participation in the community is determined by gender.

The shift to gender-neutral language promotes gender equality. Please respect the pronouns that community members provide in their profiles.

For more information, please refer to Drupal’s Values and Principles about treating each other with dignity and respect.

Cultural Differences

When to use this nudge:

  • Racist language.
  • When language is used that references/promotes a stereotype that is ethnically, racially, or religiously specific.
  • When a conversation includes language that is culturally-specific (local jargon and/or cultural references that don't translate well) that those not familiar with the culture wouldn't know.

Formatted

This discussion appears to have escalated due to the inclusion of culturally-specific language. This may be harmful to our community as stereotypes can exclude or tokenize community members, devaluing their individual contribution and value. Please avoid language that imposes an identity on an individual or group.

We should be mindful that not all words and phrases translate to have the same meaning. Please be mindful that different cultures may appreciate different levels of directness in their communication styles and that may impact how words are presented or interpreted.

For more information, please refer to Drupal’s Values and Principles about treating each other with dignity and respect.

Escalating emotions

When to use this nudge:

  • It appears that emotions are running high in an issue.
  • Communication styles have devolved to be less professional in nature.
  • When 2 or more community members appear to be referencing past history with each other that does not help move the current issue forward.

Formatted

This discussion appears to include escalating emotions, creating the opportunity for miscommunication. The invested parties are encouraged to take a break from this discussion to help gain perspective. It is important to the community that all members are shown the appropriate amount of respect and openness when working together. Additionally, there are resources offered by the Drupal community to aid conflict resolution should those be needed.

For more information, please refer to Drupal’s Values and Principles of seeking first to understand, then to be understood. We ask to please suspend judgment until you have invested time to understand decisions, ask questions, and listen. Before expressing a disagreement, make a serious attempt to understand the reasons behind the decision.

Intent vs Impact

When to use this nudge:

  • It appears that comments include terms, tone or in some way indicate that the message that is trying to be conveyed may be lost.

Formatted

This discussion appears to include content that may easily be misinterpreted, creating the possibility of escalation. This may lead the thread in a non-productive direction. Please be mindful of how your comment may be understood and think about its impact. Even the best intentions may be lost if the content is not understood to be respectful. It is important to the community that all members are shown the appropriate amount of respect and openness when working together.

In order for our Drupal Community to thrive, we need to move forward with mindfulness and empathy.

For more information, please refer to Drupal’s Values and Principles of be constructively honest, and relentlessly optimistic. Additionally, there are resources offered by the Drupal community to aid conflict resolution should those be needed.

Fixed missing space in "Escalating emotions" nudge text.

Should the title here refer to January 2021? If so perhaps the motivation for that date could be in the issue summary so people know why it's there. Maybe a more descriptive title would be "Community Health nudge templates" ? Not changing it directly since this whole topic is new to me.

For what it's worth, this is a really inspiring initiative and I am so thankful to the people who are working on it.

BramDriesen’s picture

I was actually thinking the same this morning but forgot to post a comment about it. I think your suggestion is great.

Title: January 2021 nudge templates » Community Health nudge templates

Thanks @greggles!

Updated the title of the issue

xjm’s picture

Noticed an accessibility issue -- "this article" is not good link text. The link text should make sense out of context. Reference: W3C: Don't use "click here" as link text.

xjm’s picture

I also think that the issue links should be replaced with [#1234567] tokens, since those will be converted everywhere to issue titles and therefore address another accessibility issue along the lines of #14.
