When I create an image that is too large for the main content area, the right sidebar overlaps the image.
If we could set images to a certain size relative to the content area, this problem would fix itself.

Or is there already a way to do this that I am missing?

Yes, just define the desired image dimensions for the "preview" image size/preset.
