trying to use invite by email, leads to the following error on submitting email address to invite.
Error: Cannot create references to/from string offsets in drupal_array_set_nested_value() (line 6841 of /includes/common.inc).
The module version I am using is 7.x-4.1-rc1.

I ran into this problem a couple of years ago. The solution is to switch to the Dev branch until we can find one of the maintainers to kick out a new release for 7.x.
