The exif settings exist, but they don't currently do anything in the 8.x version of this module. We should look into removing the settings or maybe find some way that we can integrate the exif module and take advantage of any functionality they offer that might be useful here.

Previously this module would read image exif data and display the data in a table. Simple enough to bring back if needed?

Started looking into this a bit:

/**
 * Implements hook_ENTITY_TYPE_update().
 */
function photos_photos_image_update(EntityInterface $entity) {
  // @todo form alter "bundles_to_check".
  if (\Drupal::moduleHandler()->moduleExists('exif')) {
    $config = \Drupal::configFactory()->get('exif.settings');
    $shouldUpdateMetadata = $config->get('update_metadata');
    if (!isset($shouldUpdateMetadata)) {
      $shouldUpdateMetadata = TRUE;
    }
    $inserting = !isset($entity->original);
    if ($inserting || $shouldUpdateMetadata) {
      $exifContentHandler = new ExifContent();
      $exifContentHandler->entity_insert_update('photos_image', $entity);
    }
  }
}

It looks like there will have to be some changes in the exif module to make it work with the photos_image entity.

Title: Exif settings » Exif module integration

Since the exif module stores the data in fields that makes it searchable.
