Using the Entity API will unlock several new features and make it easier to integrate with existing contrib modules like pathauto to create custom image URLs instead of /photos/image/[fid] for example.

Hello, first step is to add the media field:
/admin/config/media/photos/fields

Then update display settings as needed.

Then it looks like we still need a way to add a single photos image entity (/photos/image/add) and/or a way to select the default field for the multi-upload forms. The multi-upload forms currently default to field_image but we could add an option in the admin settings to choose the default image upload field.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or thoughts. Also if you can explain the usage a bit that might help (videos, etc.?). The current multi-upload forms will only work with images. Feeds or some other module might be needed to mass import other media types.
