Currently, the only way to choose categories (vocabularies) from WLW is if you have a vocabulary set and the terms are already loaded. If you want to add more terms, there is no option in WLW. Other blog platforms allow for this functionality, but not Drupal. The only option in Drupal is to refresh the list.

This module should allow for the categories to be added to from WLW.

in 6.x-1.1 I added the feature to add tags. If there is a new tag added in WLW and a vocabulary with free tagging turned on is assigned to the node type the tag will be added. If there are multiple vocabularies with free tagging enabled assigned to the node type the first one reached(lowest vid) will have the tag added to it.
