Introduced in branch:
8.8.x
Introduced in version:
8.8.0-alpha1
Description:

In Drupal 8.7 and below, on multilingual sites, the Media Library view was previously showing duplicated media items—one for each translation:

Two of each image shown in Umami

While there are instances where you want to see the full list of all media items on the site—for example, in order to translate them—while you're *browsing* the media library in order to insert media into your content is not one of those times.

To help facilitate both use cases, some changes have been made to the views that ship by default with Media Library:

1) The media overview page in the admin panel at admin/content/media now defaults to a table view, for consistency with other admin screens underneath the Content area, and to reduce the visual prominence of this effect.

Sites using Media Library prior to 8.8.0-alpha1 (provided the views paths have not been overridden) would find a grid view at admin/content/media. This path will now provide the default table view. The grid view will still be be available at admin/content/media-grid, and a link to this is provided in the secondary tabs accompanying the default table view. Any modules that make assumptions about admin/content/media displaying as a grid should be updated to reflect this change.

Table view now showing language filters

2) Additionally, both the grid and table views in the admin panel are now filterable by Language, once again for consistency with other Content admin screens.

3) The "widget" view, which gets invoked from an e.g. a Blog post edit form, either from a Media field or from a WYSIWYG's media embed button, now displays in the current user's interface language, falling back to the site's default language if this is unavailable. Language filters are not available here, in order to simplify the interface:

All images in Spanish except for Vegan Brownie which does not have a Spanish translation

The drawback to this approach is that users can only search for media in the language it was created in. For a "full" search, they need to use the admin views. If this is undesirable, site builders can remove the default_langcode filter from the view. There is talk of improving the multilingual search experience in https://www.drupal.org/project/drupal/issues/3086347
