I encountered this same issue. The easy solution is to unset the mailchimp site id in the configuration on the dev site, but a checkbox would be nice.

@millenniumtree it could works, did you try it? If the mailchimp id is not set does the module complaints about it? I will try your suggestion :-) thanks!
