DD&I Initiative

Objective/Mission Statement: a template DD&I talk for individuals to use for camps.

Problem/Motivation

Build a standardized 'stump speech' that any member of the group could give, i.e. a broadly-accessible talk that promotes our goals, message and work, that can be given at any camp or meet up, etc --- aka a DD&I talk template.

Proposed resolution

Create a DD&I talk that can be extended. Also create a policy for using said talk.

  • Share slide deck
  • Take most recent version of presentation and make a generic copy by replacing speaker-specific and venue-specific info (e.g. "Your name here")
  • Flesh out speaker notes so that anybody can pick up the slideshow and give it.
  • Create a public calendar/list of events where this talk has been given and is going to be given/proposed, plus the associated member of DDI leadership
  • Create a policy for using this deck ( @ leadership team)
  • Offer speaker trainings/support?
  • Create a BoF template as well?

I'd like to have a record (if possible) of when the talk was given, and where, and possible a collection of recordings if they exist?

Someone also mentioned that it would be great to have a small section where each speaker could tell their own story, which I think would be really excellent.

There's been some motion on putting together a session proposal for GovCon. Proposal is due on May 25, Conference is August 22-24. For now we're working on the session proposal collaboratively over on a Google Doc at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gRpfGWkoqW-HzFD0NwYQFnB8oj222eFfyt4c... Anybody who wants to jump in with thoughts on that doc is welcome.

The goal with this once it's complete is to turn it into something that is generalizable to any number of conferences, so hopefully that works hand-in-hand with this issue.

Status update:

We've put together an initial presentation, which was given at GovCon on 8/23/18. Big props to @rubyji and @dmkelner for doing a bunch of work on the slides and for giving that presentation! The next step here is to generalize this presentation a bit more, improve the slides and speaker notes, and give this presentation at Drupal Europe. @sparklingrobots and @ekl1773 have already had a presentation accepted, and so we'll polish up a copy of these slides as a template to polish up and give there. I'm hoping as part of that, we can also take the work we do as part of that to have get a truly conference- and presenter-independent template that we can maintain and give to anybody who wants to give it.

updated the issue summary - please make changes to the mission statement. I'm not sure who the lead on this is - so I'll let you decide that (but this is definitely one of our official initiatives).
