Quite often I say to people that Drupal is the largest Open Source community of contributors, with over 100k contributors. I get this figure from the https://www.drupal.org/home home page.

Earlier today I was asked by Javier Eguiluz, Symfony evangelist and trainer at @sensiolabs as to the validity of this figure:

I’m curious about that 100,000 contributors figure. Where can I find the full list of Drupal contributors? Thanks!

I wondered if you could shed any light on this, I presume it's something like who comments and not just amount of people who log in as that's not really 'contributing' unless we're measuring server load as contributing?!

That's where the number comes from: https://git.drupalcode.org/project/drupalorg/-/blob/7.x-3.x/drupalorg/dr...
Look for $stats['number_of_confirmed_accounts'] in the code in case the line moves.

The front page doesn't show anymore the number of contributors, so it's not possible to know what number it was showing, nor giving a list of contributors.

It could be as fjgarlin says, or it could be that was the number of users who contributed patches for Drupal, or who simply committed code in drupal.org repositories.
