I am seeing some font-related warnings and errors when building the User Guide in some languages. I'll post details here the next time I attempt a build. See also #2883552-4: mkebooks.sh: parser error : Input is not proper UTF-8. (for Chinese).

Here is a list of the font errors in the latest PDF builds... There may be more that come up with more pages getting translated. Languages not listed here have no font errors.

All languages

Font "Symbol,normal,700" not found. Substituting with "Symbol,normal,400".
Font "ZapfDingbats,normal,700" not found. Substituting with "ZapfDingbats,normal,400".

In all languages, there are various errors similar to this (in English, on pages 10, 126):

Line 1 of a paragraph overflows the available area by more than 50 points. (See position 820:381)
Content overflows the viewport of the fo:region-body on page 29 in block-progression direction by 105354 millipoints. (See position 2:9692)

And this one appears on English page 204 (and similar positions in other languages):

span="inherit" on fo:block, but no explicit value found on the parent FO.

Comments on these errors:

- Page numbers reported seem are sometimes one off. So if it says page 2, it really means page 3 (Page 3 is the table of contents).

- EN Page 10 overflow error seems to be from the toolbar image in the preface-conventions topic (I think?)
- EN Page 126 overflow seems to be from the result image in the block-place topic.
- EN Page 204 is in the glossary. There may be a formatting instructions problem there.

- Looking at the HU table of contents page, it looks like if it couldn't find a given character in the font, it put in a # character in the document. So... We probably need to find a different font that has all the characters? For instance, on that page, the word "Preface" in Hungarian should be Előszó and it's being shown as El#szó because the ő character is not available in that font.
- Japanese has the same problem. The word "Preface" there should be まえがき and it is showing up as #### instead.
- I assume the same for Ukranian and Chinese.

If there's any option to build PDFs with a different font, then I'd vote for give a try to Google's Noto typefaces: regarding Wikipedia's list, this includes the widest variety of glyphs.

jhodgdon’s picture

Regarding Helvetica, it looks like the answer is going to be to use a font with better coverage, such as Gnu Unifont -- see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_font#Comparison_of_fonts

I have not yet figured out how to get the PDF processor to recognize this font, but I think it is possible... I have seen several posts but it's confusing to me, so will have to investigate further.

jhodgdon’s picture

Yeah, either Google Noto or Gnu Unifont looks like the best option. I "only" have to figure out how to make the processor use these fonts... it is possible I am pretty sure but I am not sure how yet.

I installed both Noto and Unifont, and I agree Noto looks better, and it works fine for Hungarian, English, Catalan, and Ukranian (so far at least). However, it does not work well for Chinese -- it doesn't have all the characters. I have to use Unifont for that... Unifont doesn't have Italics as far as I can tell, and it isn't pretty for Latin-script languages (looks like an old-style computer printout), so I'll limit its use to the languages that Noto doesn't work with.

Anyway, I figured out how to configure this, and have made changes to the scripts. I also verified that on a different computer that doesn't have the Unifont font on it, I could still view the Chinese PDF file.

So, this is fixed... I'll actually make new e-book output as one of the last steps of #2857156: Make a 3.x branch.

Issue #2887136: Font problems building PDF files for some languages

Now I reviewed both the ePub and PDF versions of latest 8.x-3.x release and I can confirm that they look even better with the new font used. Jennifer, thanks a lot for this improvement!

Yes, the Hungarian one looks good! I still would like to have a better font for Chinese and Japanese, but the other languages are fine (For Farsi I was able to use the Noto Arabic font, which looks good, but the Noto CJK fonts did not work for building the PDFs because they are not TrueType). At least Unifont (using for Chinese/Japanese) seems to have all the characters, but it is not very pretty...
