I have read through a pile of issues on this module, and am currently experimenting with the 2.x version, but at the moment I don't completely understand what the best route for me is. The site I am working on currently has all of the files in S3. I would like to use Commerce File to sell files on the site, and therefore need to have a private file system set up in S3. From reading all the docs and the issues, I'm still not clear on whether there is a supported way to do this with the amazons3 module using either version 1 or version 2. Can someone clarify the current status for me?

To be a little clearer - the site currently uses amazons3 version 1. I've upgraded to version 2 in a dev instance. That seems fine.

What I would REALLY like to be able to do is to make a single field be uploaded to private. I don't see any way to do that with either V1 or V2 - other than a lot of unresolved patches and workarounds. So I guess I'm asking what the best practice is. I'd just as soon not convert over to using one of the other S3 compatible modules, but if that's what it will take to do this in a stable supportable way I will. But I'd rather not.
