Using the Google geocoder by default on Open Atrium creates several limitations in having the geodata (events location) available for other uses outside of the Google environment. As such, it would be great to have another default that plays better with the open source/data philosophy.
I found the Mapzen Search API particularly interesting for this and contributed a geocoder_handler, which hopefully should get its way into future versions.
Opening for consideration having an open geodata service as the default for geocoding event locations in Open Atrium.

Argus commentedI support this request. Open it up so we won't get locked in.

mpotter commentedI'm happy to change the default if somebody contributes a patch. Atrium uses the GeoCoder module which supports a number of services. As long as the Geocoder can parse the locations as well as Google does then I'd have no problem with changing it. You can also easily change it on your own site by overridding the Geofield on the event content type. So nothing is "locked in"
