I have a block with an ajax pager in my left column, and the pager is obscured by the background leaf.gif that is applied when it shouldn't be. The attached patch fixes this issue by modifying style.css.

I think this patch can be modified to do the same thing for the rightmost column in the same manner, but I do not have a test case.
