At present IMCE uses a variety of inconsistent and unfriendly terminology to refer to its features which, for non-technical or novice users, can be really confusing. I've watched this happen during training and fielded support questions from my clients about it on a few occasions, specifically:
- CKEditor toolbar icon title “Insert images using IMCE File Manager”
- IMCE file field widget “Open File Browser” link above “Choose file” button
- Old D7 “Browse Server” button in CKEditor image & link dialogs to launch IMCE
For one, no-one knows what "IMCE" means and although I think it's important to respect that name and its history, it should be absent from the content editing user interface.
Secondly, regarding the old D7 "Browse server" button, it's surprising but true that many non-technical users have a different concept of “server” e.g. “isn’t the server that computer in our office?” i.e. they don’t necessarily equate “server” with “files uploaded to the website”. This would be better named “Browse website files”, “Browse uploaded files”, “Open web file manager”, “Find website files” or some such. “Open web file manager” seems to me to be the most universally applicable and readily understood terminology.
Lastly, whatever terminology is chosen, it should be used consistently i.e. if "Open web file manager" is deemed to be the most user friendly terminology then it should be used everywhere that IMCE can be launched i.e. links, button labels and icon titles etc.
