Updating DvG
Updating DvG is not without risks. Especially the beta-to-beta upgrades may break/change functionality, features and styling. We however try to make updates withing the upcoming 1.0 series as painless as possible! As always with updates and upgrades, you will be required to test core functionality, and styling, but we will try to make updates as non-disruptive as possible!
Update to the latest DvG release
Upgrading a Drupal Distribution is somewhat more difficult than a simple module update. Technically, it's a 2-step operation:
- fetch the latest DvG profile
- build Drupal core using the make file in DvG
Afterwards, you need to check for database updates, and check both the DvG status report and Drupal's own status report for possible issues.
1. Fetch the latest DvG profile
This can simply be done using drush: drush dl dvg --select. Drush will replace all code at /profiles/dvg with the version you chose to download. Any customizations of the DvG modules, themes and features will be lost.
Note: drush up dvg will fail when updating an installation profile, hence the download action.
2. Build Drupal core using the make file in DvG
The easiest way to update Drupal is to build it from the DvG make file. This has one (security) implication: since this is a merge with a newly built Drupal and the existing one, upstream deleted files will not be deleted in your tree. You may use the Hacked! module to detect stale files afterwards.
You can build a new Drupal core with all DvG patches applied by executing drush make profiles/dvg/drupal-org-core.make in the root of your DvG installation.
