There's a new option in the latest version of filefield sources that fixes some old bugs, but the User Interface doesn't provide a clear picture of what these options actually do.
"Search all file fields" is pretty clear, however...
No (only fields with the same field base will be searched)
What is a "field base"? This is new terminology in Drupal-land. Can we explain this using words used elsewhere in the Drupal UI?
Yes (all file fields will be searched, regardless of type)
Now it's field type? What is the difference between field, field type, and field base?
Do we mean the same field (one with the same machine name?), or perhaps the same field-type (image vs file)? or is this something new?

profak commentedHello @jenlampton!
it's great that you point to this not very clean option titles, so let's try to make them clear.
I'll start about "field base". Well, it's configured field that is abstract and not instance. This terminology used, for example, in Features "hook_field_default_field_bases()". I'm sure you know what i mean ("field_config" table).
What about:
No (only current <field_name> field will be searched)- we search files in same field.Yes (all fields of type 'image' and 'field' will be searched)- we search in all fields, that has type 'image' or 'file'.What do you think?
