Hello! I am a member of a team tasked with choosing a base theme for a very large Drupal project due to start very soon. From what I can tell, Adaptive has come a long way in preparing itself for Drupal 8 and this is a good sign. I do have a few questions, however.

Can you provide a ballpark figure as to how long we have until an official release for Drupal 8? Which features of Adaptive have been prioritized? Also, we were wondering if we were to build using Adaptive in a Drupal 7 environment, are there plans to make it easy to migrate our subtheme to Drupal 8? I noticed some notes on the main page regarding some variables simply not existing in the new templates and such, so will there be documentation warning us which features not to use in our Drupal 7 version in order to make migration to Drupal 8 more painless?

We are a very responsive and motivated group. We are likely to be active contributors to the issue queue of whichever theme we choose. Thanks, in advance, for any information you can provide!

When Drupal comes out in RC (Release candidate) we can nail down approaches and get very close to releasing something stable - until then there are some big changes still to come in Drupal 8 core and we (themers) can't do much until those changes are completed. Sorry but I can't really give a better answer than that, I can guess that I think it won't be too long now before we see an release candidate, maybe just a few months away. I think D8 will ship before the end of 2015.

I would not start on D7 then migrate, its a huge migration, D7 and D8 are chalk and cheese, they are just totally and utterly different systems in every regard. You will not be migrating, you will be re-building. I think like most projects I have taken D8 as an opportunity to wipe away all technical debt and rebuild a totally new system from the ground up.

I think for D8 you either need to build a very simple theme based on core and Classy and be prepared to weather the changes, or if you use Adaptivetheme for D8 wait until Drupal 8 RC1 is out and then for Adaptivetheme D8 RC1. I think its a big risky to go with D8 for now, not until RC1 and the API's get locked down properly.

The way I see things shaping up, we might we weeks away from a release candidate for Drupal 8, the critical issues list is very short and I think we're getting close.

Any update on the general state of AT for 8.x? Close to a beta or RC?
