This issue is about getting simplytest.me ready for the Try Drupal Program.

Background

simplytest.me was to be included on the Try Drupal page in the early mockups but got removed out in order to honor the significant financial investment of hosting partners as a first stage. After many people on Twitter and Drupal.org said that they still wanted to have simplytest.me included on the page, the Drupal Association (Joshua Mitchell) got in contact with me and discussed how this can be done. They pointed out that they expect a lot of traffic going to the Try Drupal sites and that I should make sure that simplytest.me is able to handle this traffic. While I'm busy doing that they will try to visually include simplytest.me in a way that still honors the financial investment of the other partners.

Service changes

ordered by importance

  • make the front webserver of simplytest.me able to handle a lot more requests [✓]
  • make backend able to simultaneously host a lot more sandboxes [✓]
  • change sandbox default runtime from 30 minutes to 24 hours [✓]
  • get an SSL certificate and encrypt all traffic with https [✓]
  • make sandbox URLs shorter (http://s6e25a29a08cf5a8.s3.simplytest.me/ -> https://efsy.ply.st/) [✓]

These changes are introduced at https://new.simplytest.me/ which will later replace the current simplytest.me site.

DNS entries changed new.simplytest.me/ will replace simplytest.me/ - the old server will still be reachable at old.simplytest.me/ until I'm sure the new one is reliable.

I'm afraid we still don't have a solid way to incorporate simplytest.me into Try Drupal that wouldn't take away value from the other participants. The Try Drupal program has been extremely effective at creating leads for companies working to convert those leads into Drupal site owners. Simplytest.me is not a good match because it does not have the same conversion power that a hosting company can achieve. Certainly not any conversions that we could track for their effectiveness.

We would like to explore integrating simplytest.me into project pages as a means to quickly demo a module, theme or distribution—Drupal core as well. In exchange for that traffic to simplytest.me, we would like to be able to present at least one call to action back to Drupal.org alongside the other ads you have on the loading page. Would that be of interest?

i give up :-(

That's really annoying. Marketing eh? :-/

The greatest irony being that the offer to place a simplytest.me on project pages is already happening as a community thing, anyway. And on issue queue patches, there is a piece of work in progress to replace the dreditor plugin with inline js, including the link.

In other words, the "consolation prize" offered is being done anyway.

Dave Hall just made a great write-up on why the current options are way to much work to just "Try Drupal" in Trying Drupal.
