As of Drupal 8.0.0, the minimum supported version of MySQL has been raised to 5.5.3. Prior versions of MySQL are no longer supported by MySQL and many have known security vulnerabilities.

MySQL 5.5 also has some features relating to character sets and indexing that help improve internationalization and performance.
