The problem is that my poll appears twice. I specify in the 'site building > blocks' page that I want it in the left sidebar, but it also appears as a blog entry on top of the 'content' block. How can I get it to appear ONLY in the sidebar?

Edit your poll to NOT be promoted to the front page, and set the Most Recent Poll block to the left sidebar. That should do it.

This issue is being closed because it is against a branch for a version of Drupal that is no longer supported.
If you feel that this issue is still valid, feel free to re-open and update it (and any possible patch) to work with the 7.x-4.x branch.
