I want to give all users all access to all files in files/. I need to enter something in the "Use a shared folder: " field, but I do not want to use a shared folder. As a work around I enter ".", but this gives slightly ugly (but functional) urls. It would be nice to be able to disable user directories without enabling a subdirectory.

You should use "/" instead of "."
IMCE6 gives you finer grained control over directories.

I will try that, thanks. Unfortunately due to some incompatibilities with other modules I can't upgrade to D6, but otherwise I would. I already saw that IMCE 6 is a large improvement, thanks for that.
