expanded menu and edit advanced settings problem

Upgraded from 4.7.4 site to 5.7.
Enabled i18n module components first and then enabled menu module.
Created node including creating menu item in primary links menu.
Problem: want to make that menu item Expanded. Tried two ways, both failed.
1. Under admin->site building->menus I clicked edit next to desired menu item in primary links menu. I checked box next to Expanded, and then the submit button. Result: blank white screen.

2. Create node including creating menu item in primary links menu from the create node page. Then if I go back to edit node page and click on "You may also edit the advanced settings for this menu item" clicking that link results in a blank white screen appearing.

Have not seen anyone else describe this problem. Have no clue what's causing it or how to correct it. Trying to create multilingual primary links that can be expanded.
