Cleanest way to alter delete icon

Hello,

I need to change the delete icon but I don't want to change it in the module folders because changes will be lost on future updates.
So I find that copying the entire theme_basic_cart_render_cart_element() function in the template.php file of my theme did the trick but there might be a more efficient way to do it.
