Video.js (HTML5 Video Player) - Video file
You are browsing documentation for an older version of Drupal, which is not supported any longer, and the information may not be correct. See current documentation for Contributed modules
Videos arrive in many formats. The Video.js README mentions four formats. I successfully used an MP4 file in Firefox. Please add your experience of what works and what does not work.
Use multiple video formats to support multiple Web browsers
https://www.drupal.org/node/2350945 describes a problem with video format support in browsers. The MP4 format fails in Firefox on a Mac. The Mac user tested several browsers and they all worked with Webm but not MP4. How do you support different browsers?
The HTML 5 video element lets you specify multiple video source files. Videojs will include every file from your video file field when you set the field to allow multiple values. The Web browser will read through the different video sources until the browser finds a file the browser can display.
Change your video field to allow multiple values. Upload your video file in at least two formats, Webm and MP4. Videojs will use both. Your browser will choose the right one.
Use Webm for new browsers and MP4 for old browsers.
MP4
MP4 worked in the latest Firefox with no special treatment. MP4 works in many browsers but has licensing issues, creating the need for something like Webm. You will need this format for the ten years it will take to replace old browsers.
Mov
Does anyone use this? I do not know of a browser that accepts only this format.
Ogv
Ogv has no license issues but is not backed by someone big and will probably be replaced by Webm in most new browsers.
Webm
Webm was introduced by Google as a free open format and is needed for the Mac. Webm will replace MP4 in the free open world.
