http://cgit.drupalcode.org/publication_date/tree/publication_date.module... seems to handle nodes created before this module get's installed. It seems like code is not needed anymore: http://cgit.drupalcode.org/publication_date/tree/publication_date.instal...

I think the update in the install hook is a way better solution since it has no performance drawback...

ok after installing on a site being on production for a while i'm a 100% sure the code is not needed. Patch attached for removing it.
