Problem/Motivation

We're operating on the assumption that the purpose of "Get Involved" page is to help people who have decided to become contributors:

  1. Find issues to work on;
  2. Learn the logistics and politics of contributing;
  3. Take the next step towards becoming a contributor.

Given this assumption, our current "Get Involved" page, and the entire "Community" section, does little to accomplish this goal. This issue is part of a larger goal to fix the current "Getting Involved" section of drupal.org.

Proposed resolution

This project will consist of several phases:

  1. Break apart and restructure the current "Community/Get Involved" section in a more intuitive way.
  2. Move the "Governance" and "Code of Conduct" sections (currently hidden in "About Drupal" and "Getting Involved Guide") into a new "Community Structure" book, modeled after the Ubuntu Community Structure page: http://community.ubuntu.com/community-structure/
  3. Update content and reorganize information in the Getting Involved Guide.
  4. Create a prototype of the suggested changes to the section.

Here's a link to the google doc of initial brainstorming: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v9nGXGQ0SBnASTzF8WA0MhFJSr1-WqxzcQrH....

Remaining tasks

  • create the issue
  • ...

User interface changes

Changes will mostly involve the structure of content, and hopefully include the addition of images.

Just wondering if we should set something up before Drupalcon, that'd be a great moment to test it.

This was submitted to rails girls summer of code https://github.com/rails-girls-summer-of-code/projects/issues/21 (because I heard that it did not need to be code or rails). (and this has not had any work on it since drupalcon austin. :( so it clearly needs someone who is not overcommitted to own working on this)

After discussion with @ndrumm and @yesct, it was determined that part of the problem with these sections is that they are currently hard-coded into the system as template files. This means that we can't edit them.

A new book page has been created for "Community Home" and an issue created to switch the current Community Home page to the new book page.

Updated the issue summary.

During a review with Lauren Shey at the Community Summit, we discovered that information about Drupal's community structure and governance were stuck in two separate areas of the website. This creates issues for transparency and conflict resolution. We suggest moving these two pieces into their own book, which can be linked to as the last page in the "Community" section.

This seems like a direct duplicate of #1414988: [Meta/Plan] Create a new Getting Involved Guide section... I'm going to take the bits of issue summary for here that aren't already there and add them, and close this as a duplicate. I don't think we need two open issues about it? If we do for some reason, feel free to explain and reopen this. I'll be sure to link (and look at) that Google Doc too, since much thought has already happened...

Note: the idea in the issue summary here about the Community Structure section, I moved to #1288470: Create 'Community' Section instead of #1414988: [Meta/Plan] Create a new Getting Involved Guide section, as it seemed to make more sense. I'm about to update the issue summary of that issue... right now it doesn't have much of one... I'll make sure that idea gets into the summary.
