Ok, I documented the dependency on the project page. Interestingly, filefield itself already has the dependency in its .info file, so you can't (re-)enable it without mimedetect being installed. So you must have upgraded with filefield being enabled before, sorry if we didn't communicate the new dependency good enough.

Yep, I had upgraded from a previous version.

I'm feeling a bit silly for not working out the dependancy myself.. rough day at work :-(

The 'undocumented' comment was just a throwaway remark !
Didn't realise it was accurate.

I've since sorted it out, by disabling and then re-enabling the module.
