How to manage photos on Flickr.com

To get the most out of the Drupal Flickr module, on your flickr.com account you should:

1. Complete the information associated with your account and your own photos.

Photo captions and album titles on your site show relevant info available on Flickr dynamically (which can also be suppressed). The more data you provide on Flickr, the better the info of embedded photo captions and album titles gets.

ACCOUNT INFO

• Go to https://www.flickr.com/profile_edit.gne and fill in first and last name. It will be used instead of your screen name (username). Make sure anyone can see it at https://www.flickr.com/account/prefs/privacy/.
• Set your Flickr account apart from everyone else with a personalized URL. At https://www.flickr.com/account locate the "Your Flickr web addresses" section. Make sure you pick a web address you'll be happy with because you only get one shot at this! Once you pick an address, it can't be changed.
• Upload also a buddy icon there. It might be visible on Flickr slideshows that you embed. To avoid being rendered as an ugly white square ideally the icon should have a transparent background (make your icon transparent online).

PHOTO INFO

Go to an own photo page on Flickr (or https://www.flickr.com/photos/organize/) and edit the following info:

Title

Even if you suppress the caption, the title is still shown if you hover with the mouse over the embedded photo. It is considered the minimum info that should be supplied manually. By default the filename is used, resulting in ugly meaningless titles like SAM_0320 (automatically suppressed in the latest version of the Flickr module).

Description

The longer description is displayed on mouseover. If it doesn't exist the title is used.

Location

Add the photo to your map. Find a location and just drag it onto the map. Once done if the caption is set to display the location, it will show the name of the location the photo is taken (area, city, country), linking to the map on Flickr with your other photos taken in the same location.
To avoid this hassle, if you buy a new camera, make sure it has integrated GPS or on your smartphone, turn on the camera GPS. Furthermore import EXIF GPS information from your camera automatically.

Date taken

Practically all digital cameras include this info in the EXIF data that is included in the image file itself (most commonly a jpeg). Of course you should set the date on your camera to be correct.
Note:

• Some image editing software removes the EXIF data.
• Some cameras lose ("forget") the date setting when changing the batteries. Avoid those.

Add Flickr tags

A powerful feature of the Flickr module is a block that grabs photos from a node author's Flickr account tagged identically as a taxonomy term attached to the post. Write a blog post about your trip to Italy and it grabs all your Flickr photos tagged 'Italy' and shows them neatly in a block alongside the article on your site. Thanks to the Flickr module not only you avoid uploading photos to your site, but you even don't have to to select them.
If you use the Flickr app you even avoid manual upload all together. To add tags to multiple photos in one go, use https://www.flickr.com/photos/organize/.

2. Put own photos you want to embed as a slideshow in photosets (Flickr albums).

The Flickr tags as mentioned above can be used to generate embedded albums that show exactly the photos that you want. But if you want to display an album as a slideshow, you should put them together in Flickr photoset, (also known as 'album' on Flickr).
Make sure you give a Flickr photoset a meaningful title as it is used as the album title if embedded on your site.

3. Put the photos from others you want to embed as an album in Flickr galleries.

What photosets are for your own images, are Flickr galleries for photos of others you want to embed as an album on your site. You act as a digital curator for the work from others. You can mix a selection of several Flickr users in a gallery. Don't put your own pictures in a Flickr gallery as this might invoke errors. Use a Flickr album for that (see above).
There is no slideshow display for Flickr galleries yet.

4. Create an invite-only public Flickr group.

Suppose you manage the website of the local football youth club. Of course there are parents that take photos every game that you might want to use for a monthly blog post you write. Most indicated for this kind of use case is a Flickr group.
