Unless we're suddenly experiencing login problems with Google itself, it appears that having Google double-authentication enabled defeats the login process with the module.

I don't think that it fails. I use the module with 2 factor authentication. You just have to create an app password, as they are called. Yoy cannot use your regular google password. You can find more details here.
