In Drupal 7 and before, it is possible to attach replacement arguments to menu items with the title and title arguments keys. Drupal 8 has support for this with the title_arguments key in tabs, actions and contextual links and _title_arguments in routes. For example:

Drupal 7:

$items['example'] = array(
  'title' => 'Translate @title',
  'title arguments' => array('@title' => 'content type'),
);

Drupal 8:

example.page:
  defaults:
    _title: 'Translate @title'
    _title_arguments:
      '@title': 'content type'
  ...
