There is an ongoing debate here about the issue in the taxonomy module. This module provides an alternative autocomplete callback that replaces the original.
The issue there is fixed without some edge cases, but here, the fix is not present at all.

Implemented the solution used in the taxonomy_autocomplete for extracting the correct search string.
Adding a patch that solves the issue for me.
