I have been using 5.x-2.x giant version for one week.

i've upgraded because i was willing the multiple recepeint option. but i have disappointed and the the problem i was expecting occured; some users spamed.
i am afraid of facing the difficulties about controlling this spam problem.

wouldn't be much mor ebetter if only admins (or a role with permission) could send multiple message?

This have been fixed in drupal 6 privatemsg branch. please upgrade to drupal 6. This will not be fixed for drupal 5.
