For Solr 4, we have integrated support for the incredibly useful soft commit feature. However, we don't use it at all in the default setup, and there is no way for users to enable it without custom code either. I don't really know why that is the case, but probably because I'm stupid and/or didn't really think about it.

Here is the trivial, yet effective patch changing the default.
If someone knows a reason why using soft instead of hard commits is a bad idea for more than a handful of sites, then we can of course also make this configurable in the server settings. I just can't really think of a reason.
