A comment (http://drupal.org/node/199699#comment-660440), raised some interesting feature requests.

  1. First, the capability to have multi-site functionality (aside from different "files" directories)
  2. the capability of user specific "upload" directories, or more specific user media directories (such as files/example.com/user1/media)
  3. and the ability to specify the user FTP upload directory.

I've got a module currently in development, which will deal with at least the FTP side of this process. I'm not sure yet how I'll do the question of multi-site functionality, but there now exists within the MAPI, the ability to define base "allowable" directories, which may be outside of the main site. This could be a potential security nightmare, but this is the price to pay to have integrated access.

This will be coming up in future module additions. Closing for the sack of moving to the more current release of the module.
