Zen is displayed halfway off the left side of the screen

Can you provide a screenshot or be more specific with your description? Is this with Zen Classic or with plain Zen? Are you a PC user with a high-resolution monitor (see http://drupal.org/node/196726)?

I’m not seeing any issues with Zen and Firefox.

Looks like you are using some module that is adding black boxes across the top of the page and setting the background to dark grey.

if you disable that, do the problems with Zen go away?

I've tested both simplemenu 4.0 and quickmenu 1.1 and neither look like the Jon’s screenshot. Also, both of those modules work fine with Zen.

Jon, can you enlighten me onto what module (and version) you are using to provide you with the top-of-the-page menus?

John, I had apparently this same problem without any add-on menu module and without any customization, just plain Zen 0.8.

Perhaps one of the blocks has something to do with it? That's the only thing I can think of at the moment. I have most standard blocks and a few non-standard ones activated. Everything works fine in Zen 0.7. In Zen 0.8 everything is off the left side of the screen, making navigation nearly impossible.

No time for further testing right now, sorry. Had to uninstall Zen 0.8 and go back to 0.7. I'm hoping that some more information pops up here before I start another test.

With additional input, no one will be able to solve this.

Make sure you applied the latest update. In particular, the change of code to layout.css. Check the CVS messages to be see what I'm talking about. It's the issue that addresses content left and content right sidebar.

Very good! Could you describe what exactly solved it? Did you use the latest development version? Is that 5.x-1.x-dev? I assume 0.8 still has the problem.

Any idea when we can expect the next release version?

Does anybody know what's happening with Zen Basic and Zengine? Is that superseded by the newer versions of Zen?

Zen 5.x-1.0-beta1 is available now.

Zengine was created to fix sub-theme issues that Jeff was having in Zen 5.x-0.6 (caused by limitations in the design of phptemplate in Drupal 5.) Zengine won't be updated for Drupal 6 since the those issues were fixed in Drupal 6. Also, in the latest Zen 5.x-1.0-beta1, I’m pretty sure I was able to fix most of the sub-theme issues Jeff was having in Zen 5.x-0.6.

And, based on their very short issue queue, Zen Basic and Zengine don’t seem to have garnered a lot of usage. But you would have to ask Jeff (Zengine) and Hannes (Zen Basic) about what they want to do with those projects.

thanks for the good information! I can't beta test right now, but I'm looking forward to 5.x-1.0.

I hope and assume that Zen will still be in Drupal 6. Have pretty much got used to it. It is very good to have a very manageable and easy to understand theme that lends itself easily to modifications and sub-theming. Zen fulfills these demands very well.
