Really not sure what to make of this... it looks less like a search form problem to me, and more like the sidebar region overlaps the content region, but I'm not sure why.

Did I miss some installation step or something?

Yeah, I styled it for the topbar. If you come up with a fix before I do, just submit a patch and I will commit it.

I have the same issue, though I went ahead and placed on the topbar.
In my case I need a bigger header and a wider search box.
