I am using the Adaptive theme and sub themed it but the "home" link is not showing in the breadcrumb. In the theme settings there is nowhere that says show or hide the breadcrumb

Your question is a bit unclear.
Do you see the breadcrumbs on all pages except homepage ?
OR
Do you see breadcrumbs everywhere, and the text "home" does not have a link ?

This is the latter: the "home" trail is not rendered using AT.

There is a setting in Adaptive Theme settings page.

From "Extensions", enable "Markup overrides". save the page. Then on the bottom, the settings about breadcrumbs will appear.
