My content type has an image field which users can upload files to. Setting user reference for a node does not seem to give view permission to the image files. Is there something special/additional I need to do to have the user reference extend to the files for the node?

Sorry I'm not familiar with the concept of file access, nor have I encountered this issue with images before. This module gives access to the node, so you'd think that would let you see the files in the node. The node_access API doesn't provide instruction that further work is necessary to see content within that node.

Are you perhaps using the https://www.drupal.org/project/file_entity module? If so I think you need support there.
