Right now, you can't easily alter the fl param because you need to know the mapping between the drupal field and the indexed field, the service.inc file has a method for that called getFieldNames but unfortunately, this method is protected so you can't call it from outside.
It would be nice to lighten your query when you don't need to return a lot of fields if you only need a few.

I reckon it would be much more useful to just make that method public. Patch attached does just that.
