Allow users to set their password for their new account

I would like to have a password field in the Account Information checkout pane to let the users set their password when checking out.

I could simply add a form field somewhere, but in Rules there is no way of setting the users password.

I have found these two posts which both say it is not possible at the moment:

How can we solve this?
