After the latest round of Lullabot workshops, we recruited a few new docs team members. It came to my attention that although docs team members have Full HTML privileges, which means that they can link off to images hosted on their own sites, they had no ability to upload images directly to drupal.org. This means that some of our most important documnentation (visual diagrams, screenshots, etc.) could be stripped away from us at a moments' notice, when someone decides to not renew a domain, or to re-arrange stuff on their sites.
Since this is unacceptable, I've enabled "upload files" permissions for the "documentation maintainer" role, and enabled jpg jpeg gif and png support. We can add/remove file types later, if necessary. On IRC, there were some concerns that we've standardized on PNG as the preferred format for screenshots, and allowing other types dilutes this. However, I believe our most important commitment is to reduce the barriers of entry to people who are willing to help improve documentation, and forcing them to convert a nice diagram they spent an hour making to another format is in direct conflict with this.
And yes, I realize this means that docs team members can now upload images to forum posts, for example. Hopefully this is an acceptable risk for the tremendous amount of gain we receive.
Thanks to mtopping for bringing this up.
