Another option might be to patch that module to allow it to support both relation and entityreference as backends?

The module is broken, and doesn't have any recent activity. Also, I don't really see how it would be useful in a general context, so I don't see a reason to put support into relation. If you really want it, move this issue to the entityreference_dragdrop issue queue, and re-open. If it needs changes to the Relation API, open separate issues.
