Would love to be able to allow users to post comments on relations just like they do on any other content on the site!

That's a feature request to the comment module, not the relation module (Comments only apply to nodes, not any entity). You can do something similar using the Reply module, which lets you add a reply field to any entity bundle (e.g. a relation type)
