Ok Basic setup
Modules Required: Views, location, gmap, gmap_location, gmap_views, location_views

Configure a content type [event in my example] to require collection of locative information.
Under admin/content/types/$your_content_type.

I use Gmap to set the lat and long, as the address to lat/long conversion would never work in Ireland :-)

Create a few nodes, with lat/long.

Create a view, select page view, gmap view.
Apply the appropriate filters, eg only the appropriate node types

I have a couple of taxonomy terms associated with each node.
I have those set as filters, and then i expose those filters allowing the drop downs.

You make it sound so easy - and indeed it is!! (apart from setting the end date -can't seem to work out the delta syntax).

I did indeed get it working - thanks again for your help.

No public demo yet - hopefully out for the end of the month.

I was trying to display events and needed to only show current events - hence the end date.
