This issue is to take work going on to implement the kernel-installer, and to create an issue that a git branch can track to. If one has already been opened please point me to it.

Do we need localStorage for it? If anything client-side I'd think sessionStorage, but it may be better to use server-side sessions now that we actually, you know, can. :-)
