URL rewrite

I'm not sure what's going on with gallery and the URL rewrite. Everything in the install pages/gallery settings says that it should be working, URL Rewrite works for both drupal and the standalone gallery, but not together. From what I saw on the 5.1 branch it looked like the .htaccess should be modified with a subset of gallery's .htaccess, but this is not happening. Maybe there is a way to force this? Should I just do it by hand?
