Two simple things that would avoid the big mistake I made:

1. Empty the master branch (just remove all files, add a readme saying "Use the named branch", and commit)
2. Create a stable release, even if it's an alpha. It's probably better than that though, but it would at least give a marker.

I deleted the master branch outright, and I'll be tagging a beta in the next day or two when I'm done with issue catch-up. There's already another issue for the beta, so I'm just going to close this.
