Would like a clearer cascade of rel and ds features: multiple pages, each with a layout

I am so excited to have found rel and display suite! I have hit a snag in my design ideas, however, which may already be in the works. Nevertheless...

Once I have registered a content type and engaged display suite, I seem to be able to use either one or the other to shape the input/edit experience. Either I can put field groups into various regions of the page layout, or I can use the tab groups and tab items to create 'pages' of input fields.

I would like to use tab groups for pages, on which I would have all the same regions for placement. It might look something like this:

Tab group
|_ Tab item
    |_ Header
        |_ Field 1
        |_ Field 2
        |_ ...
    |_ Left
        |_ Field 3
    |...
|_ Tab item
    |_ Header
        |_ Field 1
        |_ Field 2
        |_ ...
    |_ Left
        |_ Field 3
    |...
etc.
